Hallowe’en is no longer……

halloween-08-002.JPG….the sole preserve of Pagans and the practitioners of the black arts. It is now firmly in the ownership of families, especially children.

This last Hallowe’en I went as a helper to the home of Sue Wills, the driving force of the Peafields Playscheme, along with Carol Stares. Sue and Carol, secretary and chairman respectively, were each presented by Deputy Mayor, Roger Sutcliffe with a Mayor’s Citation in recognition of the hard work they put in to the Peafield Carnival and Playscheme. Sue’s house was decked out with ghouls, grave stones and bats, to name but a few. Sue and her neighbours put on food in the form of Bat’s Bites, Snake Nests, Witches Apples and the like to attract the children of Peafields Estate.  The queue of children snaked around the street all waiting to see the witch and claim their gift.  The Grim Reaper (Sue’s partner, Nigel) was keeping order, complete with scythe! I was made up as a ghoul, but looked more like a Pekinese!

Donations were for next year’s carnival and the parents were very generous. Aside from a short shower of rain, the evening was a huge success. It was a pleasure to take part in this, the third Hallowe’en party.

The way some members of the Government are clowning around at the moment would seem to point to their having taken their degrees at Barnum & Bailey’s school of tomfoolery.

If you look at the points made by Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, about the current financial woes, you will no doubt want to join the party. To do so, call me, or go online to the Lib Dem website; you will find details there.

Citizens’ Panel AGM….

…….was on Wednesday evening and wouldn’t you know it? The traffic was grid-locked all around Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse. It took one and a half hours to reach the Civic Centre from my home. However, it was worth the aggravation of the journey. There was a short intro’ by Mayor, Tony Egginton and the rest of the meeting covered the year’s results and improvements. The presentation by the Town Centre Team was riveting and the Enviro Warden gave a great insight into the workings of the team.

The panel numbers approximately 1000 in a membership of all ages and these worthy citizens really care about our district and help to make  the suggestions and put forward the fresh ideas to improve Mansfield. The whole evening was filled with  exciting facts and figures and I  am very glad I took time to attend.  My reward was being chosen, along with Councillor Andrew Tristram to judge the competition to find a fitting caption for the  photo of Mayor Egginton, giving the golden Jimmy Choo shoes to Rebecca Adlington, Mansfield’s Golden Girl. It was a tremendous evening, with displays from the Museum, Grimebusters and Town Centre - with market stall rent books going back to the 1930s!

Heat or Eat? That is the question…….Empty Grate or Empty Plate?

.….. .Go to fullsize image………..empty-plate.jpg……This is the dilemma facing many low paid workers and unemployed during this roll up to a full-blown recession. Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg is calling for a drop of 2p in income tax, which would be recovered by closing the loopholes in the tax system  which allow many wealthy  people to play the system and avoid taxation. The LDs would also increase tax on the most polluting activities.

…….Thomas Jefferson said this in 1802.

‘I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.’

Nick Clegg said “Economic recovery starts at home.”

………I believe that to meet the challenges of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility

whats-it-worth-not-a-lot.jpgThese words are as relevant today as when they were written and it is good to see the world of finance pulling together to bring this current crisis to a satisfactory conclusion. Vince Cable, LD Shadow Chancellor has spoken very eloquently on the strategy needed to address and solve this problem, which is touching all our lives.

You can read what the Liberal Democrat leadership has to say on the matter by logging on to the LD website at http://www.libdems.org.uk/
